Laura Vae Gatz Photography

When I am traveling and I see something that attracts my eye, I focus on the essence of what makes that scene; whether it is the juxtaposition of two flowers mirroring each other in color and angle, symmetry in nature, patterns or texture. In my photographs I work to eliminate all unnecessary elements in order to distill the image down to the scenes basic elements. Traveling is one way to  be exposed to new things. I work so that I can travel. My absolutely most favorite thing is to be somewhere I have never been before. Even as a kid, I remember knowing that I wanted to grow up to make enough money so that I could travel. Knowing that I’ve done just that puts a smile on my face.

During 2007 I visited one of my “life list” destinations: the Galapagos Islands, with my dad. I also traveled to Guatemala with my Aunt and Uncle and got to see how Behrhorst Partners is partnering with local communities to improve their daily lives, from ovens that smoke less and are less expensive to use, to bringing running water to the village.

Within thirteen months I somehow, unwittingly, explored all seven continents. Starting with Asia, I toured Vietnam, Cambodia, and Taiwan for almost three weeks. Then I visited the Baltic countries, including Estonia, Russia, Finland and Sweden amongst other countries. And my most recent romp was a dream come true - - a two month trip around the world. This included Antarctica, Easter Island, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Botswana, and Zambia. What an amazing time. Three photo books of my trip can be found HERE (cover images below).

My last big trip was one month in the Arctic Circle, starting in Svalbard, Norway. The photo book can be purchased HERE.
